Trunk or
Treat and Halloween
Nik’s
favorite holiday is without a shadow of a doubt, Halloween. He loves all the spooky characters and pumpkins
and scary sounds etc. The kid can’t get
enough of it. It seems like at times, he
eats and breaths this stuff. So when he
learned that we were going to a trunk or treat with our ward, and doing a Halloween
parade at school, he was more than a little enthused. Its around this time of year though, that I
worry about costumes, not because I worry about where to find one etc., but
because my sons reaction to them. You
would think that since he has since a love for all things Halloween, he would
simply love the costumes as well.
Wrong! When it comes to costumes
Nik has never been to keen on any of them.
He thinks their great but then once he tries them on, its all tantrums
and tears because something doesn’t feel good.
So this year, I thought if I started early enough talking about it, that
Nik would get so excited for wearing his costume and that his excitement would
override his annoyance of how the costume actually felt. Although this did work, what I hadn’t
expected to happen was how many costumes we would have to actually go
through. In the end we went through 4
different costumes, a mummy, a vampire, a dragon, and a gorilla. We settled on a mummy. So I wen to work and made a mummy suit, only
for it to shrink disastrously and mysteriously right before the trunk-or-treat.
(Uggg!) So Vampire it was (I guess it
was a good thing we had 4 different costumes after all. Backups are a must I suppose.).
We
decorated the trunk of our car to look like a big monster mouth with big teeth
and a tongue flowing out. Nik was a
vampire, Ian was a little monster (he was so cute! And he was such a
trooper. He had no qualms about being
stuffed into a big over stuffed costume.), and I was a sprite/witch (don’t
ask. I wanted to dress up with the kids
for fun, but time ran out and all I could come up with was a painted face).
It
was a super fun night. Nik had lots of
fun, but was a little shy about the whole thing.
After
the candy, we all headed in for food and games.
We became separated from Nik in the gym for a few minutes and apparently
it was a horrific experience for him. We
found him crying and the rest of the night he clung to us and then told us his
stomach hurt, so we left early.
The
next week for Halloween, Nik got to do a Halloween parade with his school. He was so excited and had a super fun time
dressing up again and showing his friends and teacher his scary costume.
